Where We Work
Shyntorbulia is a remote Khasi tribal village nestled between the Umsiang and Umsha rivers in Ri-Bhoi District, Meghalaya — reachable only by a 2 km walk from the nearest road. It is here that RWF's Community Resilience Initiative has begun building the village's first organised livelihood asset, a community-owned nursery. This new initiative adds a second livelihood track alongside it — open to the whole village, not just one group.
The Challenge
Beyond seasonal agriculture and forest produce, residents of Shyntorbulia have few organised ways to earn a supplementary income. There is no craft-training infrastructure in the village today — no looms, no sewing machines, no workplace, no trained instructors, no route to market — even though the raw material, skill, and willingness to learn are already there. Isolation, not lack of capability, is what has kept this opportunity out of reach.
Our Intervention
RWF is building a community craft livelihood programme for Shyntorbulia, open to men and women alike, covering three linked skills:
- Constructing a dedicated 20x40 training and workplace building for the village — its second organised community asset after the nursery.
- Equipping it with weaving machines, electric and foot-operated sewing machines (chosen to work through Shyntorbulia's limited grid power), and fabric cutting equipment.
- An intensive training programme in weaving, tailoring, and embroidery for 50 residents of Shyntorbulia, led by a resource person/designer, a master tailor, and an assistant trainer.
- Raw materials to carry the first cohort straight from training into production — not just practice pieces.
Our Vision
To give Shyntorbulia a second, community-wide source of income — complementing the nursery-based livelihood work already underway — built on skills the village already has and a workplace it has never had.
Expected Outcomes
- A standing training and production building in Shyntorbulia, owned and run by the community.
- 50 residents — men and women — trained and equipped in weaving, tailoring and embroidery.
- A working set of machines and tools ready for ongoing production, not a one-time training exercise.
- A second, replicable livelihood model for Shyntorbulia and other underserved villages in the region.
